    • While the string quartet has been the most popular ensemble for centuries, some prefer to enchance the sound of strings by adding a woodwind or brass instrument, such as flute, clarinet or trumpet. On some occasions, flute may be used instead of the first violin; however, this may not work for some of the pieces.
